Daring Patronage: From Chagall to Mondrian

The violinist by Chagall

The Jewish Historical Museum in Amsterdam is exhibiting selected works from the collections of three art collectors who collected the work of artists who were then unknown but later became world-famous: Mondrian, Chagall, Breitner, Isaac Israels, and many others.

The time period was 1885 to 1940; a time when most collectors played it safe and invested in artists with established reputations. Three Jewish patrons of the arts, Andries Van Wezel (1856-1921), William Wolff Beffie (1880-1950), and Salomon Slijper (1884-1971) had the guts and the vision to offer their support to relative unknowns. The three men were more than just art lovers; they befriended and encouraged many artists and provided some with vital financial support, often by purchasing their work.
Oops, I missed May 15. Was away the whole day at the annual European World of Bluegrass festival. Pictures follow on www.judieye01.blogspot.com.

Today, a visit to the Hollandsche Schouwburg (Theater Bldg) in Amsterdam. This is the location that the Jews, during WWII, were "rounded up" and sent to labor camps. These flowers were laid down on Memorial Day. The stones are also put down in memory of those who died.

White plate with blue mice.
When a baby is born in Holland everyone is treated to a rusk with candy-coated anise seeds (mice). When it's a boy, the candy-coating is blue, and for a girl, pink. It's really yummy! The use of anise seed dates back to the 17th century. It is believed to stimulate milk production in the new mother.

Liberation Day - May 5, 2010

Here is a peak at our Liberation Day festivities. We were in a parade which drove thru 10 miles of rural Holland. The weather was beautiful, the spirits were high and everyone was having a great time!

Boys will be girls.

Yesterday, May 4th, was Memorial Day in Holland. At 8:00pm everyone in the country observes 2 minutes of silence in remembrance of those who gave up their lives for our freedom. Today is Liberation Day (picture follows tomorrow).

If I were Hansel or Gretel
I would be enchanted by this house
I would knock on the door
and hope for the wonderment of sweetness and chocolates.
The springtime flowers enrich the fantasy.

IF I were a cat
IF it were sunny today
IF only
THEN I would lie in the ferns and relax
with my eyes closed and dream kitty dreams.

OOOOOOOOOOOh, Happy Birthday!

This mermaid is located in the fairy tale section of the Efteling theme park. It struck me because in the United States this statue would be considered obscene and would never be allowed in a children's park. I think it looks natural and is certainly not indecent.
